National Diabetes Prevention Program
(NDPP)
-
The National Diabetes Prevention Program lifestyle change program can help patients build healthy new habits that last a lifetime.
-
When patients join the program, you’ll learn, laugh, share stories, and try new things.
-
Studies have shown that people with prediabetes who participate in a structured lifestyle change program like the National DPP can cut their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58% (71% for people over 60 years old)

The NDPP Program:
-
The NDPP is a year-long program offered in person, online, or through a combination, with 16 weekly sessions in the first 6 months and 6 monthly sessions in the second 6 months.
-
Trained Lifestyle Coaches, who may be health professionals or non-licensed personnel, lead the program.
-
The program includes group support, typically with 10-25 participants, though online groups may be larger.
-
CDC-recognized organizations can use a CDC-developed curriculum, create their own for CDC approval, or use another CDC-approved curriculum.
-
The PreventT2 curriculum is available in English and Spanish, with cultural adaptations for the Spanish version.
-
Thousands of CDC-recognized organizations offer the program across the U.S.

Lifestyle Coach Training for Diabetes Prevention Programs
-
Lifestyle coaches are peer educators, community health workers, and diabetes care specialists trained in CDC’s PreventT2 curriculum.
-
They work within CDC-recognized diabetes prevention programs.
-
Training with IPDC and ADCES teaches you to provide person-centered care, collaborate with the diabetes care team, and use strategies to enroll, engage, and retain program participants.

CDC’s Diabetes Prevention Recognition Program (DPRP)
To ensure quality and impact, the CDC sets standards for organizations offering lifestyle change programs. The CDC’s DPRP ensures these programs are delivered effectively and with fidelity. Organizations must follow a CDC-approved curriculum and show meaningful patient outcomes to achieve CDC recognition.
For more information, see the Standards for CDC Recognition.
